about ethos

Ethos is a location-based, ephemeral social application. Content shared through the App is intended to be visible only to people nearby and to remain available for a limited time before it is removed. This Privacy Policy reflects the limited information the App needs to provide that experience.

information we collect

We collect only the information needed to provide the Service:

Location. Because the App provides a location-based experience, it uses your device’s location to show you content relevant to your area and to associate the content you share with your general location. The App requests your permission before accessing location, and you can control this access at any time through your device settings. We do not use your location for advertising.

Account information. When you create an account, we collect an identifier you provide (such as an email address or phone number) and a display name you choose. We use this information to create and secure your account and to allow you to sign in.

Content you share. When you create or share content through the App, we store that content as necessary to provide the Service and to make it available to the appropriate audience for its limited lifespan.

Notification information. If you choose to enable notifications, we collect a notification identifier so we can deliver notifications you have opted into. You can control notifications through the App and your device settings.

Information collected automatically. When you use the App, our systems automatically receive certain standard information needed to operate the Service securely and reliably, such as your device’s IP address and basic usage information. This is used for security, abuse prevention, and to keep the Service running properly. Your IP address may also be used to estimate your general location to help provide the location-based experience.

how we use your information

We use the information we collect only to:

We do not use your personal data for advertising or marketing, and we do not build advertising profiles about you.

how we share your information

We do not sell your personal or sensitive user data. We share information only in these limited circumstances:

With other users, as part of the Service. Content you choose to share is made visible to other users as part of how the App is designed to work. Your chosen display name may be shown alongside content you share. Your account identifier (such as your email address or phone number) and your precise location are not shown to other users. Any sharing of your content is initiated by you through your use of the App.

With service providers. We use a limited number of trusted third-party service providers to help operate the Service — for example, to deliver notifications. These providers are permitted to use the information only to perform services on our behalf and in accordance with applicable policies. We do not authorize them to sell your data or use it for their own purposes.

For legal and safety reasons. We may disclose information if we believe in good faith that it is necessary to comply with a valid legal request or applicable law, to enforce our terms, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users, the public, or the Service.

data security

We use industry-standard measures to protect your information. Communication between the App and our systems is encrypted in transit using modern cryptography. We store data on secured systems and restrict access to it. While no method of transmission or storage can be guaranteed to be completely secure, we take reasonable and appropriate steps to protect your information against loss, misuse, and unauthorized access.

data retention & deletion

We retain your information only for as long as it is needed for the purposes described in this policy.

Shared content is temporary by design and is automatically removed after its limited lifespan.

Account information is retained while your account remains active.

Deleting your account. You may delete your account at any time directly within the App, which permanently removes your account and associated content from our systems. You may also request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us at the email above. When you delete your account, we delete the personal information associated with it, except where we are required or permitted to retain limited information for legitimate purposes such as security, abuse prevention, or compliance with law.

children’s privacy

The App is intended for users who are at least 13 years old, consistent with common standards for online services. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at the email above and we will take steps to remove it.

your rights & choices

Depending on where you live, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information, such as the right to access, correct, or delete it, or to withdraw consent. You can exercise these rights by deleting your account within the App or by contacting us at the email above.

You can also control key data practices directly:

The App is operated from the United States. If you access the App from outside the United States, you understand that your information may be processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your country.
